Can you be given antibiotics orally during labour?

Just curious, I had GBS with my first so I was given antibiotics via IV during labour, but I never thought of it until tonight.. usually in all other cases in life of needing antibiotics they are given orally so is that possible during birth or no? Anyone know why they’re given through IV during labour instead of orally?

They are given through the IV because they kick in quicker given they don’t know when you will deliver. Oral antibiotics take longer to work and GBS can be detrimental to the baby so IV antibiotics work the fastest.

It's because baby needs those antibiotics immediately, that's why you have to get them right away when you're in labor

No because pills have to process through your digestive system vs iv which is more direct and fast. Also iv antibiotics are very strong and all one dose, your body wouldn't tolerate such a high dose in pill form.

It’s been seven years since I delivered but I’m pretty sure I remember being told it also has to be given within so many hours of delivery.
