Dave Chapelle’s “Sticks and Stones”

El 💛

Was his stand up more offensive or funny?

I just saw it last night and i thought it was hilarious. But there is a lot of racist, sexist, and homophobic things said. I know a lot of people who thought it was funny but then there were some who thought it was more offensive than funny. My favorite part personally was about the school shootings and how they do drills when the potential school shooter is sitting through the same drills taking notes 🤣

All comedy is offensive tbh. If you can’t laugh at yourself then you shouldn’t be in a comedy club! I think comedy exists to allow people to poke fun at themselves and to realize that sometimes, it’s not that deep. He was making fun of women and talked about abortion too, which hit at home for me, but I didn’t care, it was still funny

Honestly this post proves his point with comedy. Comedians are scared to do their job these days. They are only allowed to make the same jokes and it’s getting old. They can’t step on any toes for fear of up roar on the internet. Society needs to laugh at its self. Our nation is ridiculous and it’s time we introduced comedy back in our lives.

How does society laugh about saying children enjoyed being molested, that just too far

It’s understandable why some people would be offended by his jokes. It doesn’t make them ridiculous.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate Dave Chapelle or anything, I understand that it’s his thing to get under peoples skin and be offensive. I just personally didn’t like a few of his jokes. Some of them were funny though.

Ya if you offend everyone/thing then no one can take it personal... If you are just offensive about one thing... Then you're an asshole. That's the whole point of crass comedy

I thought it was funny, reminded of 80s style comedy. Comedy isn't supposed to be PC, it's supposed to push boundaries and "go there" so to speak. Joan Rivers was ahead of her time when she said never apologize for a joke when you're a comedian. And I agree. Dave Chappelle was right about Kevin Hart, look where apologizing got him - No where. He apologized and people were still mad. If you're a comedian just tell your jokes, no one is forced to listen. No matter what the joke is, someone is going to take offense.

That part was hilarious 😂 I was laughing so hard that by the time he got around to taking about his dad at the end, I was in tears lol. Haven't laughed that hard for a stand up show in a long time. "Wish I could find a way out of this hell" 😂😂😂

I feel like im the only person who doesnt think Dave Chapelle is funny at all lol like i honestly cant stand watching him idk.Comparatively though, i really like Tom Segura. Idk like I cry laughing at his stand ups and he can be extremely offensive. Comedy hands down comes from a place of darkness, wether it be personal, or societal.

I don't find him funny either, he annoys me. I do love George Carlin though and he had a dark sense of humor...

It was pretty funny. I just didn’t like the jokes about the little kids and Michael Jackson, that was disturbing

That's a good question. For one I dont think Dave Chappelle is homophobic or transphobic or racist. He has a way of digging in and examining the absurdity of ALL people. He makes fun of black people all the time, that doesnt make him racist against black people anymore than it makes him homophobic when he makes a joke about gay people. He doesnt come from a place of hatred, which is the root of the isms. He comes from a place of humor. As for why the jokes about michael Jackson fell flat, E.T touched on it - a lot of it is in the framing, I dont think he framed it well. And I just dont find jokes about kids being victimized funny. It's hard to explain humor, why some things are funny and some things arent..but I hope this makes sense

Personally I just think the way he told the jokes were just too far. Maybe it’s because I have been molested, but then again I find some jokes funny if they’re done in the right way. I didn’t like how he said they must be lying because one boy said that Michael had never molested him. I also didn’t like his joke about how they should be happy it was Michael Jackson because he’s a celebrity. I just think if it was me who he was joking about like that it would really affect me. I understand that they are just jokes and he isn’t being serious, but I just didn’t like them.

I’m confused by why you guys think pedophilia is a line crosser but racism and homophobia and transphobia isn’t?

I usually find him funny as I like dark humour, but joking about children getting molested is just too far for me. I didn’t like that part at all.

It was great. Its nice to hear comedic relief when every topic is so damn serious all the time. It keeps a healthy balance. All comedy is going to be “offensive” to someone.

Is comedy really offensive?I thought the goal was to take things we normally wouldn’t talk about, and joke about them.I mean, I could be wrong, I’ve never been a huge comedy fan 😂
