Best travel toys and activities for 2.5 year old on a road trip?

We drove from North West PA to DC then to the Outer Banks with our 2 year old son. I had snacks, books, puzzles, cards, magnetic letters and a cookie sheet, and animal figurines, but our favorite was grab bags. There is a local store that has them for $1 each, they were a brown sandwich bag with a small toy or 2 and a snack. I got enough to give him one every 2-3 hours throughout the drive. The bags we bought were nice because the husband and I didn't know what was in them either, so it was a surprise for all of us. You could make them yourself, just make it exciting for your child!

We love the Melissa and Doug Water Wow books -- they're great! Also one of those doodle boards they can draw on and erase. And lots of snacks for sure. :)

Books, snacks, electronic device with games. I hate traveling during the day. I try to travel starting at sunrise or even a little before so my daughter is sleeping during most of the ride. If i cant leave early I try to leave as late during the day as I can. Its hard with a toddler they want to move around and need to go to the bathroom frequently.
