My boyfriend has mentioned anal a few times and I told him I’m not comfortable with that, and he respects that, but I’m kinda thinking about it, so what’s the pain like? What do I need to know? What do I need to do to be prepared?

Agree with the first commenter. Use lots of lube. (When I say lots I'm not talking like more than a nickle to quarter size in American coin currency size terms at a time) also go slow.
