How do I dispose of tampons?

So I’ve had my period for a few years now and I’ve always flushed them but I recently read that its not good for the environment and your plumbing. My question is if I were to start throwing them away in the trash how bad would they smell and should I get like a Walmart bag to separately put them in and throw that away every night or just put in the regular trash can in the bathroom where they might sit in for a few days🧐. If you throw them away pls lmk what you prefer doing thanks in advance😁
