Why am I not getting pregnant?

I’ve been trying for the last 8 since becoming sober from my previous addictions. I went to the gyno got a basic check up. Doctor said to try for the year and if nothing happens to go back. Any possible reasons as to why it’s taking so long? I am 29. I fell pregnant back in 2009 and unfortunately ended in abortion (please do not judge it still hurts to this day) it took one time and I was pregnant now it’s taking forever and I’m with a new man (been together for 3 years). Any tips or help? I even try to plan intercourses around my fertile period.
