Am I being a prude?

My husband’s family keeps giving & offering their old maternity clothes and baby stuff. While I’m thankful there are things we won’t have to buy, this is our first baby and there are things I am excited to buy! Plus my mom is having a baby shower for me in a couple months. I’m not the same size as them, so I had to donate all the clothes anyway, and some of the baby stuff has quite a few stains. I know babies spit up and poop...like a lot, but is it wrong for me to want new, clean things for my baby?! 😬

Not wrong. I got a lot of clothes given to me and I threw out any that were horribly stained

I will always use second hand stuff, but I would never use anything stained. 🤷‍♀️ I don't mind my daughter using hand me downs and actually make a point to go to the big Mom To Mom sales in my area exactly because they do barf and poop a lot... and then they get older and play in the dirt and get food all over themselves, so I really don't want to pay full price for something that my baby will probably have a poopsplosion in or that my preschooler is going to drop spaghetti sauce on. BUT I'm not going to put them in someone else's poopstained/ spaghetti stained pants either. It's a balance.

I am the same way! There is something exciting about buying and picking out your own stuff for your first baby. I have politely said no thanks or taken the stuff, but will donate it later on. It’s not being a prude in my opinion! No one should be shamed if you are fortunate enough to afford your own stuff. 🤘🏼

Not wrong at all! I sorted through a lot of hand me downs with my first. I did keep a lot for the possibility of not having enough clean laundry or him being sick, but I did buy a lot of new stuff. Now with my second I’m being very picky with the hand me downs I keep and even pickier with what I buy myself. I like the idea of a smaller wardrobe with the clothes being more plain so you can mix and match better. Works well with my son whose 2. I found a really great stain remover (even takes out already washed stains!) so I don’t worry about his nice stuff getting wrecked.

I’m with you. I’ve had to politely say ‘no thanks’ to many offers from my in-laws. 😂 If they’re hurt by it, that’s their issue not yours.

Just tell them “I’m ok thank You tho “ I had to learn to stop accepting everything that was given for my children next thing you know you’re racking your brain trying to decluttering a bunch of stuff you never needed or wanted

Your not a prude at all. I kept all my daughter's designer baby dresses ect in a vacuum packed bag for years knowing my little sister would always have a girl. Some of the stuff was new with tags on, others worn only once, and I sorted them out and washed them before giving them to her. She was really happy but i think thats because she knows how well i look after my stuff. Her baby is now 2 weeks old and I'm 22 weeks pregnant with a girl also. My aunty called me a snob jokingly because she knows I don't want 2nd hand stuff. I have a good job so I want to buy new everything. However I won't buy as much this time round as I've realised I bought way too much with my 1st daughter. I'm really looking forward to going shopping with my mum when I'm on maternity. I do not want to spend my time looking through piles of stuff people have given me then sorting out what il do with it because I don't want it.

Nah I feel the same way. I have a 2 year old daughter, and I’m having another girl this time around. My SIL also had a girl a year ago, so we’re loaded with baby girl clothes. I’ve still bought some new stuff. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I love picking out my babies first outfit and sleeper special for them. (And anything else super cute I see) Don’t get me wrong, I’ll use a lot of the stuff from the two older girls and it’s nice not having to buy every little thing like I had to with my first, but I’ve chucked out all the stained stuff and kept the stuff I don’t really like boxed up. There’s tons so I know I won’t use that stuff anyways, so no use getting it ready for baby. People say you won’t care that it’s stained, ahhhh I do. I did with my first and my mind hasn’t changed. 😂

I agree there's absolutely nothing wrong with wanting new stuff. If I could afford I would probably buy all new things, however I do think it's very rude to throw things away that were given to you rather than just say you don't want them. Jmo though

Thanks everyone! I guess since his immediate family is done having kids, it feels like they’re just unloading all their stuff to us. I’m excited and grateful that we won’t have to buy a crib, but at the same time I’m excited to buy new sheets to fit the nursery theme we decided on, and that haven’t been pooped on yet 🙈
