If you were me, would you get your child a head shaping helmet?

Question

My baby is 4.5 months old and has had a slight flat spot since birth due to the way he sat in my uterus.
He has been going to physical therapy and the chiropractor for the last several months to make sure he doesn't favor laying on that side. 
At our last appointment, the physical therapist suggested we do a helmet consultation, but I had never felt like the flat spot was THAT bad.
We did the consultation and they said that the flatness is mild to moderate (only 7mm off). They called it defamational plagiocephaly meaning that the right side of his skull is pushed forward slightly. His right ear and right side of his forhead are pushed very slightly forward. (There is nothing affecting his vision, hearing, or brain functions, its just a looks thing.) They said that the helmet decision is up to us.
If he gets the helmet, he will have to wear a 23 hours a day for 2 to 3 months and there is no guarantee that his head will come out perfectly round. (And we will have to pay out-of-pocket for it).
If he doesn't get the helmet, his head may or may not correct itself over time.
We have til Monday to make our decision because if we want to go to the helmet route it has to happen now.
What do you guys think???

My mother-in-law said that she never noticed it and that we shouldn't do the helmet. While my mom said that she noticed it a while back and feels like kids are going to tease him if we don't correct it.

We live in an over-treat society when it comes to healthcare, so I would get a second opinion before deciding to get a helmet. I feel like I see kids in helmets all the time these days. We ‘80s kids never wore helmets and our heads look fine as adults!

Why not? I know it would suck paying out of pocket for something that may not work, but what if it does? I personally would especially if this is something you've already been trying to correct.

I think that if there’s anything you can do to attempt to correct it, such as wearing the helmet, you should do that. It’s not about other children teasing him, it’s about how it will affect his own self-esteem. Additionally, there is no guarantee that he’ll grow out of it and it could actually cause other facial deformities or issues as he develops. So if it were me, I’d be doing the helmet.

I would advise not. It should correct itself as they start sitting up and sleeping in different positions naturally. It’s questionable if these helmets are even very effective. They are very uncomfortable for the baby with high expense and little result. My relative had one and it was not worth the money. Your baby has a very small amount of flattening. My baby had it worse but now her flat spot is nearly gone without any special treatment. I just minimized the time she spent in a car seat and rotated her crib mobile so she wouldn’t sleep on her flat spot so much. She started rolling over in her sleep and that pretty much fixed the ptoblem.

My son came out with a very pointy head. He was head down for a big chunk of my pregnancy and I was told he was pressing hard into one side of my hips. And then around 37 weeks, the OB said they could feel his head even though I didn’t have him till 40 weeks. 
His pediatrician suggested a helmet, but he said the reason would be cosmetic. My friend is a pediatrician in a different city and said babies heads take a year to fuse together and that there is no reason to get one besides speeding the process up because his head would even out on its own. We ended up switching pediatricians, and our new ped said the same as my friend. He reminded me that the companies that make the helmets are businesses and need to make sales and he felt that sometimes doctors help facilitate those sales even when they’re not needed. We didn’t get the helmet. My son has a perfect head. And I’m glad with our decision.

My son had a helmet from 8 months to 11 months old. It really wasn’t a big deal, he didn’t mind wearing it at all and he slept great in it. But even if you don’t decide to get the helmet, it’ll likely round out by itself. And even if it doesn’t, hair will grow in and cover the flat spot so people most likely won’t even notice. My son’s ending measurement has him 7mm off and I don’t notice it now that his hair has grown in
