Pets to get toddler

I want to get my 3 year old son a pet for his birthday next month but not sure what to get him.. we aren’t home much to take dogs outside.. he loves kittens but we don’t want the smell of a litter box... what is something that doesn’t need. A LOT of maintenance and doesn’t smell the house? Of course all animals need maintenance and attention I know this but we aren’t home a lot but wanna get him a pet
