It's my fiancé's birthday today and I decided to go all out. We moved 14 hours away from his entire family two years ago and he misses them and his culture like crazy. He's Mexican and was living in a highly Hispanic populated area, and has quite a large family who are all very close to each other. Birthdays are always a huge celebration with everyone coming by for a cookout, cake, drinks, and party. The Tres Leches cakes are tradition, but we have no Hispanic bakery's or anything near us and I wanted to give him a taste of home so I decided to make it from scratch. I think it turned out good and the smile it brought to his face made it all worthwhile

I've NEVER baked a cake from scratch, let alone decorated one or a more complicated type. The whipped topping was from scratch as well. Let's just hope it tastes as good as it looks!
