Did you use nipple creams while breastfeeding?

I've heard 2 sides. Someone told me that you dont need soft supple nipples you need tough nipples that can handle the job lol, dont use creams use cooling pads. On the other hand they hurt, they crack, you solve the problem by soothing them with cream. Bonus points for your favorite alternative remedies or cream brands. Thank you!

I only had to use cream until my nipples built up enough callous to not hurt anymore. Now they're basically numb all the time lol

If your child latches probably, your nipples wont hurt or crack if you keep them clean and properly dried. I would talk to a lactation specialist.

Yes with first kid no with second. I definitely recommend it  my nipples cracked and bled with my first kid. It helps. Trust me your nipples will get tough with or without it.

I had Motherlove Nipple Cream and liked it but barely used it. I don't think it's necessarily an either use it or don't thing. Our great lactation consultant explained that the best thing is to make sure your nipples are dry before putting anything on them or putting them away. Breastmilk drying on them is healing. She explained the problem people run in to is adding cream on the nipples before they are dry, then putting clothes back on with  nursing pads trapping moisture, which can cause more problems. I found the cream soothing in the first couple days after being sure to let them dry but otherwise didn't use it. Fortunately I never had any cracking or bleeding in over 2 1/2 years. I credit it to her advice. I'm not sure it's a cure all but it made sense to me and seemed to work.

Only the first few weeks when her latch sucked and they hurt. Now I use it when I pump, it really helps for that

Okay. So the whole you need tough nipples to breastfeed is an old wife’s tell. That is for my lactation consultant. She said to use cream. That it will help.  That if it hurts the baby is not latched properly. To take baby off and try again.  Which I would do.  Sure your nipples are going hurt. Especially with cluster feeding. That is were the cream helps.
