Pay for NIPT testing or skip it?

I checked with my insurance and the NIPT bloodwork and ultrasound is not covered, so it would cost $299. I was totally going to do it if it was covered, but now I'm not so sure because that's a lot of money. Any opinions or advice about what I should do?

I’m not sure where you live, but there’s private ultrasound places where I am that offer the blood testing for about $150. I’m not sure if they only do it for gender or if they offer the chromosome testing too, but I think it would definitely be worth looking into for you. I would keep my pregnancy regardless of the results, but I would still get the testing done to know. My insurance covers it, but I would pay for it if it didn’t.

I was told the same thing initially until I called the office back to get more info. Turns out the lab they use has an assistance program or like discount system they use, so most people only end up spending $120-$160 for the test and they bill you after the test is completed. You might want to call and ask if the lab has anything like that.

I think it’s worth it, if mine didn’t cover I’d pay for it. You just never know and having that early testing is such a great tool and it’s a nice added bonus finding out the gender early! But it is a decent amount of money to shell out.

I would say it depends on if it would affect your decision to keep the pregnancy. If it would then it’s probably worth it. If it wouldn’t, then it could cause more worry than anything. We didn’t get testing with our first because it wasn’t covered and I really only wanted it to find out gender. Not planning to get it this time around either. Good luck either way!
