Update: Sleep Training

Update after night 3 of Mom’s on Call:

The 2nd night was rough. He fell asleep the moment we laid him in his crib and slept for 4 hours without a peep, but then cried from 11pm to 1 am with only a few short breaks. I caved and went in around 1 to soothe him without picking him up, which is when we realized the nightlight (which is on a smart plug) had somehow turned on. I think that might have been why he couldn’t fall back asleep. After I left his room again, he fell back asleep within a few minutes and stayed asleep until 2:30, but then cried for an hour until I couldn’t take it anymore and brought him into bed with me. 🤷‍♀️

Last night was our 3rd night, and he slept for 10.5 hours with hardly a peep! I heard him wake up a few times throughout the night, but he never cried and soothed himself back to sleep in under a minute each time. 🎉 Hoping this is not a fluke and he is getting used to the new routine!

Well, it’s begun.

For the past few weeks, sleep has been scarce in our house. Little bear has been waking up 4-6 times a night, and within the last week he has refused to even be put down in his bassinet or crib. Instead, he cries and cries and cries until I finally give in and just bring him into the bed with me and let him use me as a pacifier all night. I’ve got nothing against cosleeping but it was not working for our family or giving any of us the sleep we need to function.

One of my husband’s coworkers had a baby in April also and recommended Moms on Call. She’s been using it with her kids and her new LO has been sleeping through the night for months. So I read the book yesterday and last night we tried it for the first time.

I thought it would be terrible. I expected hours of crying (for both me and baby) and no sleep at all. But he did pretty well for such a big change! He still woke up several times throughout the night but he only cried for ten minutes each time before putting himself back to sleep. I think it helped that he was so tired from a lack of good sleep recently.

So today he is fully on the MOC schedule and tonight will be night two of the sleep training. I’m hoping it at least won’t be any worse than last night. 😬 🤞

Anyone else tried this? I’m missing my snuggly bear at night and it took everything in me not to go get him in the middle of the night, but he needs good sleep and I know this is the best way for me to help him get the rest he needs.

Anyway, just wanted to share my experience for any of you going through this same thing. I’ll let you know how it goes as we survive night 2 😅
