Anyone PRN/REGISTRY/PERDIEM at a hospital? How does it typically work?

I have an interview for this type of position and I’m wondering if they ask me to work does it mean I have to work or can i refuse it. How does this position typically work?

Answer

I’m what they call ichoice. It’s similar to PRN except one rule. 
Keep in mind every hospital has different rules but here’s how ours works. 
PRN pick up any open shifts available. Not required to work more than 2 shifts per month. If asked to work you have the right to refuse unless it is your assigned holiday. 
Ichoice. Must work 2 shifts per month. Can refuse a shift. Not required to work holidays. 
Downside to both is: 
Example: I can only work weekends. So if for that month there are no open shifts on weekends then I don’t get shifts that month. 
We get paid a higher base pay and we get a shift differential for picking up a shift. Typically it’s your base pay + an addition $10-$15 per hour. If someone asks you to pick up a shift to help them out you only make your base pay. No differential. Which sucks. If someone (another ichoice or PRN person) picks up a shift with differential pay and then can’t work the shift and you pick it up instead you will either not get the differential pay or get a small portion of it. 
I enjoy ichoice. I get to spend more time with my kids. And if I work 3 shifts a month I make more money then if I was working full time.
