Does importing food from other countries do more harm than good?

🙂🙃

I’ve recently been watching the Netflix documentary series “rotten” and it really shows a huge problem with importing food from other countries. For instance the avocado industry is a big contributing factor to the violence going on in Mexico, the avocado industry is also contributing to water shortage in Chile and deforestation in Mexico. The cocoa industry which is imported for chocolate production is a huge contributing factor to child labor in Africa, deforestation in parts of the world, etc. On top of all this many of these people are not even making a living wage, some of them making less than $1 per day for hard labour. I’m sure there are other fruits and products that are imported that are contributing to problems in other countries as well. In reality we could live without importing foods from other countries. We would have to go without certain items at certain times of the year or rely more heavily on indoor growing facilities, but it could be done. It seems like importing products like this may be causing more harm than good for the rest of the world. What are others opinions on this?
