Car seat inserts... unsafe?

Question

I bought a car seat insert for my baby’s car seat and now I’m seeing articles about them being unsafe?? Are you ladies using them? I’ve never heard before that they’re unsafe. I’ll include a picture of the one I have.

Using anything that isn’t from the car seat company made specifically for the car seat is not safe.

No they aren’t. You should only use the pieces that came with the car seat, they are tested for safety. Extra pieces like that can cause positional asphyxia or injury during an accident.

Absolutely unsafe. No I will not be using one.   Only use what is provided with the carseat from the manufacturer

Unfortunately there are lots of things out there like this that are unsafe. Nothing can be attached to the straps (like a paci clip) or hang from the handle. Even some leather seat protectors aren’t recommended (you’d have to check the car seat manual to see what’s allowed). If baby doesn’t fit properly in the seat you can use rolled up wash cloths or baby towels. I recommend following Car Seats For The Littles on Facebook, or they have a website. Lots of helpful information there and they will answer any questions you have, give you recommendations for seats, help you with installs, fit, etc.

You can't use after market accessories on car seats if you do it completely voids the car seats warrenty and their unsafe. Most infant seats come with a small head cusion that's all you can use though

Yeah, it’s unsafe. I didn’t know about this either until my last baby. Actually found out about it here on this app. I had that same insert in pink, ended up using it in her bouncer instead. 🙂

At the birth class I just went to I was told if it doesn’t come with the car seat it should not be used in it because it is unsafe.

Nope, if it didn't come with the carseat it hasn't been crash tested with the seat and therefore isn't safe. There are stories of babies who were correctly strapped in being ejected from their car seats because of after market shoulder straps. Unfortunately there's no way of knowing if they're safe or not unless they came with the seat.

They aren’t safe for the car seat as other have said. 
If you’ve already purchased and opened it, they are wonderful for the stroller, swing, bouncer, etc for a little extra support. I used one in our stroller for a while when my little napped because she was so fat she couldn’t help but slump and roll around when she slept.
