Just the phone you want. I used an iPhone 5c last year and an se because I'm cheap and frankly don't care about trends or what's in or having the newest or latest anything lol. I'm actually using a Samsung galaxy 7 right now that I bought the beginning of the year

Or at least get the 7plus. They’re reasonably priced now too, and I went from the 6s to the 7 plus and I absolutely LOVE my phone. I’m still using in now in 2019 and I have no desire to upgrade.
