I would be upset if it's a wedding anniversary. We don't celebrate dating anniversaries.  We are not even sure what day we started dating.

The first anniversary me and my so celebrated was our wedding anniversary. We never knew when our relationship went from friends to boyfriend and girlfriend.  We both didn’t feel the importance to celebrate our dating one. 
Though if it’s something important to you let him know, he may have no realized that it’s important to you so he didn’t keep the date in his head.

I have no idea what day my husband and I started dating. We knew someone of a day so we knew when we had been together for a year but didn’t celebrate it. Aside from very immediate family members I don’t even remember birthdays I’m just not good at that kind of thing
