Am I overreacting??

Question

I have a 4 month old little boy. I pick up my 5 year old niece from preschool every friday and have her for about 3 hours. Today I get her and she is coughing and sneezing a lot. She says she's been sick for a few days. It it were my 5 year old who was sick, I wouldn't have someone watch her who has a baby. I had the same problem last year when I was pregnant. I got sick twice from her. Is it wrong to be upset and not want to watch her if she's sick?

If your very worried about it you should let her mom know you don’t Want to take her if she’s sick.  I have 3 kids with one on the way and as much as it sucks once winter is here they just pass things around even with a NB around I just have to stay diligent at keeping up with hand washing and not sharing toys.

I think you’re allowed to set your own guidelines since you are not a daycare or something like that. I would let her know that you don’t want to watch a sick kid just because of the possibility that your own child will get sick. Many preschools and daycares only require a child to be fever free to return to school, so maybe she thinks the same should apply to you. But you’re allowed to make your own rules.￼

I think she should atleast give you a heads up so you can prepare 
That way you can know to tell her when you pick her up that as she’s ill she can’t touch the baby and to not cough etc near her
That’s what I do when my partners daughter comes to stay with us and she’s sick (she’s 3 and I have a 7 month old) and it works very well, she knows to stay away as she’s poorly and doesn’t want her brother to get sick too

Nope, if that was me I’d be livid at my sister or SIL for not telling me she was sick especially when you have a young infant. My son got a horrible case if RSV when he was only 2 months old from his sick grandmother. He almost needed to be hospitalized. She was sick and didn’t bother to tell me and came over anyway. I asked if she was sick because she had a horrible cough and she said it’s probably bronchitis. WTFF?!? I even said why in the world would you come over to my house sick when I have two young children and newborn? Every one of us were very sick for over 3 weeks. It was awful and extremely scary to have a very sick infant on nebulizer treatments. Now I ask her every time she wants to come over if she or anyone is sick in her house. She gets annoyed but I’m sorry, not sorry.
You have an infant and even a common cold can turn into something more serious because of their immature immune systems. I don’t blame you in the least if you don’t want to watch your niece when she’s sick.

I think you're overreacting. Its just a cough. My 4 year old got sick from daycare and got my 2 year old and 4 month old sick. Life happens kids get sick. I dont see the big deal

Are you planning on having more kids? Cuz if u are what are you going to do when one of them gets sick?
Id say just make sure she washes her hands and just keep a distance between her and the baby. Its not the end of the world.

I would be irritated too. It’s not right to put your child at risk just because she needs a sitter. Things that are relatively mild in a five year old can be much more serious for a young baby. Specifically, RSV presents like a normal cold in kids but can be very, very serious in babies and toddlers. I would speak to your niece’s parents and make it clear that if she is sick, they need to let you know and likely make other arrangements.

I think youre over reacting. If you continued to watch her after school knowing she was sick and didn’t mention anything, how is her mom  suppose to know you’re not ok with it? Also based on the screenshots you posted it seems she just made the assumption that you follow school rules when it comes to sick kids and she wasn’t even rude to you, she responded nicely.
