Breast pumps - rx ? Hospital grade ?

Have you loooked into getting your breast pump? I asked the doc today and he said wait until you’re at the hospital and then ask so u can get a hospital grade one —- anyone else know anything about this

hospital grade I believe just means that the pump doesn’t allow back flow so it can be cleaned and used again by multiple people. I believe the spectra s2 is hospital grade (but not the s1) and the madela I think. You only need to know that if you buy one second hand it should be hospital grade or if you try to sell yours. Call your insurance and ask where you can order a pump (aeroflow was the best IMO- edgepark is on my crap list) you’ll go to their website fill out your info and they’ll give you a list of the ones your insurance covers and/or how much it’ll cost you after insurance. They will then contact your dr for a prescription. I ordered mine when I was 20 weeks and already got it.

The hospital doesn't give you one. They let you use the hospital grade one only while you're at the hospital. They will give you the suction cups and tubes if they're nice but these are useless unless you have a pump at home.
In the US you need to go online well before baby is here and order your free insurance pump. All insurances in the US are required to pay for one now and most give you at least a couple brand options. 
The two biggest brands are medela and spectra. 
I had better luck with a higher quality medela that I purchased over the crappy free one. This time around I'm going to get a free spectra because it's quieter.

Thanks guys last time I did jsut what u guys said I got a free one from insurance well before baby got here so that was one last thing I was worrying about especially during delivery so I was so confused when he said wait until you get to the hospital and ask for my prescription this time just like I did last time at my other doctor don’t know why he said no and to wait😳

I’ve already received my “free” one from insurance. However, I will be purchasing the one I want. Insurance only provided an Ameda Finesse and I’ve owned a Medela in the past.... this time after much research of my own, I will be purchasing a Spectra pump.

If your in the US you can most likely get free by your insurance. You submit paperwork and your doc approves it and they ship to your house. Not sure what he means by hospital grade ones. I got a free one a few years ago for baby 1 and this baby I will get another. My hospital didn’t supply hospital grade ones, they let me use a pump if needed as I exclusively pumped and baby in nicu.

Maybe he’s saying that if you ask to pump at the hospital they give you one to use and since they can’t reuse it you get to keep it, so u can use that one in the meantime until you get a better one
