When to pump?

Did you guys start pumping right away or wait a while? 
My lactation consultant said to wait till around 3 to weeks so I don’t start making too much milk, but I wanna hear other people’s stories bc my breasts are so engorged now that my milk has come in and they hurt.

Pumping can make your engorgement worse since it will signal your breasts to produce more milk. ￼Plus when baby is cluster feeding to establish your supply it’ll be difficult to keep up with your baby’s demands. In the meantime, you can get a Haakaa to catch milk from your let down while nursing.￼ This may help your engorgement as well. 
I mainly pumped with my second baby and pumped right away due to medical issues. I ended up having an oversupply that lead to horrible pain, engorgement, and clogged milk ducts. I waited until my third baby was 6 weeks before I started pumping after his cluster feeding was over and this is usually when your supply begins to regulate.

I've pumped since we came home from the hospital... I love knowing she's eating enough plus she's got a brace on so it's hard nursing her but I try to nurse her a couple times a week

I started right away, I was in a wedding when he was 3 weeks so I needed to have milk stored. I have lots of frozen milk and would say I have a bit of an over supply. I’m 6 weeks post partum though and pumping right now because my son is still sleeping (6 hours so far :)), I’m not even sore tho but was leaking. I can usually pump 8 ounces after a 6 hour stretch when my husband feeds a bottle or 4-7 ounces after feeding him after a 6 hour stretch. I don’t regret pumping early, I’m glad I have lots of milk as he eats 4-5 ounces when he wakes (will finish a 4 ounce bottle, pace feeding and still nurse after)

I waited about a month to pump, after the second cluster feeding. My baby only feeds on one boob at a time so i try to pump the other after when he naps. Lately I’ve been pumping after the night feed and that’s been slowly upping my freezer supply.

I wouldn’t pump right away, you could make things worse for yourself. Feed baby on demand & your supply should regulate.
