First time Anal sex

So, my boyfriend and I tried anal a few nights ago. It just hurt so much and I refused to let him go any longer than just sticking it in. But I was also worried about if I needed to prepare for it. We didn't have lube either.

So, does anyone have any tips and tricks about getting prepared for anal? (Especially how to clean myself out before hand?) And if he cums inside, do I need to do something to clean that out, or leave it?
