When to see a doctor

I'm kind of confused about when I should see a doctor. Are you supposed to have your pregnancy confirmed by a doctor as soon as you take an at home test that's positive? I had a very faint line earlier this week, and today it was still lighter than the control but much darker than before, very obviously there to anyone's eye. I called my doctor to schedule an appointment and they booked me for what would be my 8-9 weeks. So I'm supposed to just assume I'm for sure pregnant and continue my life as usual?? Please help, I'm kind of in shock with the positive tests and it feels weird not doing anything for that long! What is normal?
