Should they get paid?

🌟

In the UK you pay £9250 per year to go to university. Some courses, such as nursing, medicine, teaching etc require you have placements

People doing these placements are often working full time. Last year my partner taught full time from March to mid July, and on top of lesson plans and marking, he also had to juggle his own assessments, reflections, and essays on his teaching

Many people in these positions are not fully supervised whilst doing so. Trainee teachers are often left with classes to manage them by themselves as soon as they are able to, in essence they are the teacher, not just a trainee. Yet you are not paid a wage at all for your work, and many people find it difficult to find a job that can work around their placement schedule. This is especially true for people doing nursing/medicine/etc degrees who often work night shifts

My two questions:

• Should students on these placements earn a wage?

• Is the current system gatekeeping these professions and preventing working class students from these degrees?
