How long did you stay out of work?

I have been diagnosed with PPD/PPA and I am 8 weeks postpartum. My OB could only extend my  disability until 11/18, then I have to see my primary care physician. I have not seen her in a long time and I am nervous she’s going to think I’m okay to go back to work when I am not ready. I work at a children’s hospital and I have been having panic attacks about 3 a week and I’m scared I’ll have one in front of the kids I work with.

Are you eligible for FMLA? I know it doesn’t pay but I have no regrets using the full 12 weeks with a few not paid. If you can swing it, I’d look at that as an option.

I would just be honest with your doctor. Tell him/her exactly what you are feeling and your concerns about returning to work. I work in a very high stress job and had not seen my doctor in awhile, but I explained how I’ve been feeling and she strongly suggested I take a full 12 weeks before returning- which I’m now doing. I was going to go back this week, but now I don’t go back until the end of the month. Im also seeing a therapist that specializes in prenatal/postnatal women...she has me working on calming meditation. I’ve created a “happy place” to place my mind when things get rough and I get anxious (mine is a local rose garden). I’ve purchased an essential oil necklace (you can find them on amazon) and put rose oil into mine, so when I need to find my happy place, I can incorporate the sense of smell along with my mental exercises.
