Are 1st and 2nd birthday parties necessary?

What are your thoughts on throwing birthday parties for one and two-year-olds? Did you or will you throw s birthday party for your one or two-year-olds?

Answer

Necessary? No. No birthday party is necessary however I love the idea of celebrating the first year of life. It's a celebration of both the beautiful life and the fact that you as the parents survived this first year too. Will they remember no they will not. Both of my kids slept through it but it is a very special birthday to me.

I feel their first birthday party is super exciting and most people attend and enjoy it. We throw birthday parties for all our kids every year but everyone is different. We will be having a big first birthday party for my son this month.

Well at that age, they won’t remember it... but I do think marking those early birthdays in some way can be really special. Doesn’t have to be a big party. But something. 
I’ve not had kids, but every year my grandad made us a card, and a little hand carved decoration out of wood (he was a carpenter) . And actually now I really value each and every one. I’ve still got a box with all of them in, right from my first birthday. Its my link to my grandad now he’s gone.

I loved celebrating my sons birthdays.. we had his first at a brewery since it was more for us and we didnt have any other friends with kids... then his second was at chucky cheese on a week day and it was pretty cute.. third we had a spiderman pizza party and a bouncy castle at our house which was a lot of fun :).. celebrate the babies! They are only little once..

1st birthdays are pretty much just for the parents to enjoy lol. My daughter isn’t going to remember hers but we have lots of pictures for her to look at when she’s older. Same for her second birthday. 
I don’t think it’s really necessary or expected until they’re old enough to decide what theme they want for themselves.

I wouldnt say necessary, but I did want to celebrate my little one, so we did both 1st and 2nd bday parties. We only invite family, though. Even if it were just us i would still have a small party just for cake and singing and enjoying family. I honestly hate birthday gifts so i always say they are NOT necessary and just want people to come so we can see them and have family time.

We did one for my brother, but it was for good reason. He was born at 28 weeks and was in the NICU until he due date. We didn’t necessarily know if he was going to make it for the first little while. The fact that he hit his milestones like a champ and was thriving when he reached 1 year was amazing, and so many people were involved in getting him that far. So we had a party with friends, family, and some of those who cared for him in the NICU to celebrate that he made it through so much in that first year. 
Typically, I’d say it isn’t necessary though. I plan to make a cake and take some pictures of my LO when she turns 1, and any family visiting at the time is welcome to get her gifts if they want, but we won’t be actively having a party or anything

They're not necessary, but I enjoy doing them. It's more so for the family than it is for the baby/toddler
