When can my baby start eating solids?

He's 4½ months old and can hold his head up on his own very well. 
My mom says he can start now but I'm not really sure. He has an appointment with his doctor in Wednesday so I'll definitely ask then but I do feel it's early still. 
He is breast fed with some formula.

My son was completely off of baby food and eating nothing but table food when he was 8.5 months old. He is now 11 months old and doing fine. He still gets formula and I give him 1-2 ounces of regular milk a day just to get him introduced before he turns 1 and gets his formula bottle taken completely.

I say trust your judgement.. doctors didn’t want me to start until my baby was 7 months, but I started at 41/2 and he did great. If you think your baby is ready then go for it. Doctors don’t know everything they know numbers. Just watch your babies bowel movement’s to make sure they’re still regular.
