1 vs 2 embryo transfer (fresh) UPDATE

TrueCrimeNerd • Getting off this shit for a while! Good luck and baby dust to everyone.

My husband and I have 7 fertilized embryos and hopefully more than 1 makes it to day 5. (I’m 28 and have never been pregnant before, male factor fertility issues)

We are in debate about transferring 1 vs 2. We would welcome twins and might be at the point where we would prefer twins, but the main driver is success with a first fresh transfer. My center advises 1 embryo, but my doctor has left the final decision up to us.

I’ve been researching the risks, and aside from preterm labor and low birthweight, the other risks seem manageable if monitored and aware of what signs to look for. My husband and I know a minimum of 15 sets of twins, all who are thriving regardless of preterm/birth weight. On the other hand, we know a singleton that was unexpectedly and without reason born at 24 weeks. He’s doing great, but it just showed us that anything can happen, even with just one.

I’m curious what your experiences are with this decision, what you decided, and what the outcome was.

Update: Thank you for all the comments! We had our transfer today, and went in deciding on 2. The initial conversation with the dr was also 2, but then we discussed my ovary size. One of my ovaries is 5X the size it should be and I have low level OHSS, and the dr said it would be irresponsible for him to put in 2 knowing how much worse my OHSS could get if I got pregnant with twins. We ultimately decided although the risks of twins we were able to justify, we couldn’t justify the risks I faced with the OHSS. Hoping for a sticky blast!!
