Pharmacy switched my birth control, is that okay?

So I’m new to taking birth control pills, it hasn’t even been a year since I started. 2 months ago I went to my pharmacy to get my pills (Aubra) and the pharmacist told me that they didn’t have my pill but they will give me Vienva which they said was basically the same thing. I’m sexually active so I said yes without questioning since I need the pills. After that month I went back for my refill and I also picked up my brothers medicine. They put everything quickly into the same bag and I noticed when I got home that it was Vienva instead of my doctor prescribed Aubra. I don’t have anyone to talk to about this but I’m not sure if I should call my doctor and say something about it since when I switched to Vienva it gave me a weird period. I honestly don’t know what to do

I looked up both pills (go on their official websites or drug facts) and they have the same dosage. So as your pharmacist says, they are essentially the same pill, just different brands. If you’re concerned you may speak with your doctor but I wouldn’t personally be. In the future, if the brand changes, double check the dosages of progestin and estrogen and double check with your pharmacist

As long as the dose is the same you’re fine. Many company’s make the exact pill then name it something different. So I would check the dosage and if it’s different then definitely call your doctor.

I don’t think the pharmacy can switch the prescription. I wear contacts and the place that ordered my contacts ordered the right prescription but the wrong brand and the bi-weekly ones instead of the monthly ones and the brand my eye doctor prescribed. I brought it to their attention and they said legally they could not change my prescription and re-ordered them. I would think for medication it would be the same way, if it’s like this for something as simple as contacts.

I'm a pharmacy technician and we can do manufacturer changes, for birth control the name will change but it should be the same.

Ot might be a different brand or s generic. But as long as there the same medication, its ok. My daughter always has different colors. Its a new manufacture or a different generic, shes never had an issue.

Same thing happened to me- my Pharmacy ran out of my dispense as written script and gave me the generic Vienva because they said my original pill was discontinued. Same dosage and ingredients but I was a total nightmare on Vienva, couldn’t look at myself in the mirror, so irritable, weird cravings and weird period. Did some research and found my regular pill was not discontinued- it was just hard to get but still existed. Had my gyno call the pharmacy and sent over a new script for the original and put a note on my account saying to never give me the generic again. I have to call about a week before I need the new pack so they can order it because they have a low stock of it. You know your body -so even if it looks like the same ingredients and dosage and other people are telling you that you will be fine- you can still feel different!!! For 4 months I hated myself on Vienva, and since going back to my original pill I feel so much better. Talk to your Gyno and pharmacy and get back on a different pill and have them make a note in the system to never give you Vienva again! Good luck!
