Flight? Or by land? Flight, a passport is absolutely required. And technically by land too. However, I have heard of some people being able to get by with a birth certificate by land.
You can still apply for a passport and if you pay for the expedited shipping, it should be in by the time you leave.

I'd think it would depend on the country's border you are entering and their rules on birth certificate be passport for u.s. citizens etc. So I'd check that out
