At-will termination of employment should be illegal (please read)

Jessizu • I wear lots of hats.

In my state, North Carolina, it is legal to fire anyone at any moment and no reason has to be given. It's an at-will state. Many presume it's because big businesses could use it to cover up discrimination without being held accountable. There are many "at-will" states in the United States.

I personally think this tactic of employment and firing should be illegal. I feel employers should offer a reason for firing someone. Unless it was obvious illegal or dangerous activity that the employee was taking part in but, I dont agree that a company can fire 100 workers for no explanation, no pension, nothing. (Unless they want to file unemployment).

I have felt the damages of at-will employment and it sucks.. I worked for a commodity brokerage firm and was fantastic at it. I tracked train cars with grain all over the country. I spoke to production managers and I spoke to brokers. It was a lot of fun and I enjoyed it. It was a small firm owned by 3 men. I found out I was pregnant and at the 12 week mark I told my manager. It was a Friday and they all congratulated me. Monday after work I get a call from the secretary that I had been terminated. Now i never got written up, never got to work late, never left early until my work was done. But the work day after I tell them I was pregnant I was fired.. and it's all legal. I couldn't prove it's because i told them i was pregnant.. so going into my second trimester we were really hurting finally..
