Why do people think bed sharing is safe?

I really don’t understand this. People always comment on co-sleeping posts and say “well if this and this and this is followed it’s just as safe as sleeping in their own crib” but if you read any studies at all that’s not the case. There have been studies done that show that the risk of SIDS is 5 times higher when parents sleep with their infant, even if parents avoid drinking, smoking and illegal drugs and the baby is breastfed. There have been studies that have shown 70% of SIDS deaths occurred while bed sharing. There have been studies published that show that 80% of the deaths that occurred while bed sharing would NOT have occurred had the child been placed on their back in a crib to sleep.

Please do not increase your child’s risk of death just to bed share. It isn’t worth your child dying so that you can get a good nights sleep. There is a reason medical professionals tell you not to bed share. There is a reason cribs were invented.

I’m referring to bed sharing when the child is placed directly in bed with a parent. I’m not referring to room sharing where baby has a separate sleep surface, as that has been shown to decrease risk of SIDS.

Also educating is not shaming and people really need to stop saying it is. Name calling, bashing, being rude is shaming. Stating facts found in studies is not shaming.
