Braiding tips for curly Puerto Rican hair

I braid my bfs hair and he always has fly aways. He has curly hair all I do is brush it out and then section it and I’ve been trying different gels.he doesn’t like me blow dry it or straighten it like I’ve seen in videos. Do you all have any times how to make it look more neat or any good products for braiding.
