Do shoes go in the washing machine?

Husband did laundry this morning when he got home, 
“I just threw in my work stuff”
Jacket/pants/etc.
Ok cool. 
Then when I go to move them to the dryer I see shoes thrown in with our clothes 🤢😖 
He says it’s normal, but I’ve never even had the idea to put shoes in there. I’ve always scrubbed mine down if they’re really bad..

I've washed mine or my husband's tennis shoes before but only by themselves, never with other clothes.

by themselves. my sports uniform gets super sweaty so i have to wash them at least every 3 days. everything goes in but it's a separate load. for everyday shoes i throw in a bunch of shoes i wear regularly and then dry them outside
