Light brown discharge?

My period is supposed to start next week but today I woke up and have been lightly spotting brown discharge. I’ve been on birth control for over a year and have let guys cum in me several times over the past year and nothing has happened. So I don’t think I could be pregnant. What could be the cause of this?
