How often to change a tampon?

I’ve never used a tampon for a long time before, and my flow is quite heavy. I’m planning to use it today while swimming and was wondering if anyone has any tips on when to know to change it?

I normally change it every 3-4 hours and i use a feminine wipe and also wear a thin pad with wings.
    In the pool im not sure but if its heavy... id wear a super tampon, shorts and change in an 1-2 hrs.

I just change mine when I wipe and I can see a little blood cause it's full. If I'm swimming I'll change it every couple hours though to be safe
