Do I need a pack n play mattress?

Question

I was planning on having baby sleep in our room for the first few months and my brother in law gifted us the deluxe pack n play on my registry that has the napper with vibrating functioning and changer tops - I was planning to get a much more basic one if I ended up buying it myself and now I’m so happy. 😭😊 He’s a super nice guy. 
My only question now is if I should go ahead and get the pack n play mattress so I can use it more like a crib? I know baby will probably outgrow the napper top fast and idk if it’s safe for baby to sleep in at night? 
We do have a crib that I picked up second hand but I wasn’t planning to use that for a few months and it’s in our spare room (which is half nursery and half gym, we don’t have a lot of space).

It’s actually not safe to add a mattress to a pack n play, just use the pad that comes with it.... there are warnings printed all over the pack n play that say this. 
As another commenter said the napper is just for short, supervised naps during the day and not safe for overnight sleep. If you remove the napper and change table, baby can sleep here:

The same base/pad is used at either level (the one that comes with the pack n play). It’s true it’s not the nicest feeling material and also not easy to clean so what you can do is add a thin waterproof mattress protector under a fitted sheet (They make some specifically for pack n plays). This will protect from any messes and give baby a soft cotton material to sleep on. As for the comfort, the thin pad my seem uncomfortable to you but it’s perfect for babies. They need a firm surface. My kids have never had a problem sleeping all night in the thin pad that comes with the pack n play.

So baby doesn’t sleep at night in the napped only during the day for napping with supervision. I had something similar except my attachment was a bassinet not a napper so he slept in that til he out grew it. You don’t need to get a mattress for this theirs a mat it comes with which is under the napper and changing portion then when baby is too big for that section you lower it to the bottom. I used my pack and play with my first son til he was a year and a half old then he went to a toddler bed.

I would recommend it because I have one similar and found that the padding gets really cold, is hard to clean, and if baby spits up then it'll take forever to dry. I ordered the matress and some sheets. It was the best decision ever!

I bought a mattress for mine and then ended up taking it out actually. None of the pack n play sheets fit it very well and the firmness was very similar to the one that came with the pack n play. Baby didn’t care when I changed it and he slept in the larger lifted section of the pack n play for 8 weeks.

I bought a mattress for my sons pack and play. It was called dream on me and it was like $37 on amazon.  I bought a sheet to go with it.

There’s a reversible mattress you can buy. One side is firm for infants the other side foam for toddlers. That’s what we’re getting.
