Membrane sweep?

I keep seeing posts about membrane sweeps but I don’t understand what they are. What does the doctor do? Does it hurt? Is it supposed to cause you to go in labor? If someone would enlighten me, I’d appreciate it. 😬

A sweep is when the doctor takes their fingers and moves them in a sweeping motion in between the wall of the uterus and the amniotic sac to separate it from the wall of the uterus. It stimulates prostaglandins to start labor. As far as hurt, that depends on the person lol. It’s mostly uncomfortable.

They put a finger into your vagina and try and feel for your cervix. Your cervix starts off far back, long and thick.
As it move forward, shortens and thins the doctor/midwife can put a finger in and swirl it around to try and loosen things up there which can help you to dilate more etc

My nurse friend compares it to how you loosen a Jell-O shot with your fingers. 🤦🏼‍♀️ sometimes it can get things moving and sometimes not. I had mine done and it caught me a bit by surprise but wasn’t awful.
