Toddler sleep struggles

So anyone else’s kid fighting sleep lately? My son is down to one nap a day, usually about an hour, and then at bed time he rolls in his crib and kicks the walls for at LEAST half an hour before finally drifting off. I’m hesitant to push his bed time LATER because my husband and I both work and need to wake him up at 6-6:30am on weekdays to get to day care in time. I don’t want him losing out on the crucial sleep he needs at this age. We currently put him to bed between 7:30 and 8. He is also fighting off his naps a little more lately. And I don’t feel like he’s napping long enough. Sometimes he will fall asleep in the car at like 5:00 when we’re taking him home. He does still sleep though the night which is soooo appreciated but I feel bad that falling asleep is becoming Such a struggle. We try to have nice wind down time before bed and limit sugar in the evenings, Any tips?

I probably sound like a broken record, but Taking Cara Babies is a GREAT resource. I'd actually try an earlier bedtime. He may be over tired and thus your body gets a rush of adrenaline, making it more difficult to go to sleep. I'd try for a bedtime between 7/730 and see if that helps any. What are the wake windows currently?

That's a pretty long wake window in the evening. If the morning wake window is working (or can't be extended because of daycare schedule) I'd definitely try for an earlier bedtime. It sounds like he's overtired in the evenings. This happens to our son too when we have to push bedtime.

Currently during the week 6-6:30 am to 1st nap anywhere from 11 to 12:30 (varies depending on the day, usually lasts about an hour to hour and a half) and then bedtime 7:30 or 8. He definately gets cranky in the evenings. He acts very tired before we put him down, then takes half an hour to fall asleep.

Also, sorry haha, if he cat naps in the car(even just a few mins), that could be affecting him falling asleep at night

What time does daycare put him down for a nap? Do they practice Crib 90 (leaving him in his crib for 90 mins from the start of his nap to help lengthen that nap)?My girl can really only handle 5.5 hr wake times. But she naps 2-2.5 hrs. Wake time 7:30a, down for a nap at 1p, typically awake between 3 & 3:30p set bedtime of 8:30p. There is also leap #10 that our babies are entering. Mine just started last Saturday.

Not a problem!! I hope you're able to get him to nap a little longer! 😊

We will try that for sure! Thank you both!

Sometimes my son will be "up" for even as long as 15-20 minutes before he goes back to sleep. I don't know if it'll work for your son to extend that nap, but maybe worth leaving him for a little bit when he wakes? 🤷‍♀️ Baby/toddler sleep is so kid-dependent! Some "rules" are more universal but SO MANY things are different for each specific child. I hope you find something that works for all of you 💕

Sounds like he’s just tossing, but not crying. Keep the sound on the monitor but shut off the visual. Then you won’t worry.
