When to start potty training??

Question

Obviously kids mature at different stages and some are ready before others, but in a general sense....what's the typical/ideal age that you begin potty training??

My son still isn’t talking at all (he’ll be 2 in January). Because of that he has no way to tell me when he has to go potty. He’s also super defiant and strong which makes anything like this super difficult 😅
I figure, until he has a way to communicate to me that he needs to go potty we’ll just wait 🤷🏼‍♀️ at this point I’m more concerned about his talking than diapers.

We tried with my step son at about 1.5-2 when he started to show interest in it. He wasn't ready. We encouraged it but never pushed him. A few months after he turned three, we had him for two weeks (went on vacation with him to visit family), took the pull-ups away during the day, and by the time we came home he was fully day time potty trained. He's now 4.5 and just starting to work on night time as he didn't feel ready to sleep without a pull-up. Now he seems more interested and willing to try. So we're doing it slowly, and going with what he chooses. Its working so far. (He actually slept without a pull-up on the other night with zero accidents 🥳) 
None of us (me, his dad, his mom) wanted to force him cause we didn't want him to regress. Waiting till he was ready really helped make it easier. Some kids are ready sooner. Some take longer. Its different for everyone. 🤷

I started at 18 months. I started just by sitting him on the pot.

I tried to start at 2.5 but he is not ready so I’m not pushing it. We will try again at 3 but we will keep telling him about it so maybe he’ll be ready. 
He tells us when he’s already peed/pooped so we need to work on that lol
