When could you find out baby’s sex?

Hi. I keep seeing people posting that they are finding out the sex of their baby around week 18-20. I was able to find out the sex of my baby at 12 weeks by a blood test. They are able to extract the babies DNA from my blood. We opted not to find out the gender but the office called me on 11/8 to ask if I wanted to know the result. We conceived the weekend of 8/30. 
Why are some waiting so long to find out? Is this blood test not an option? Just curious :)
Edit—-I am not a high risk pregnancy, or a “geriatric pregnancy” and this was covered in my health insurance plan.

Several of my friends had the blood test be wrong, so I didn’t want to do it.

Maybe some of us don't want to know. We are waiting until birth to find out. 
But beyond that, several people mentioned that either their insurance or their doctor didn't offer/cover it. Mine offered both the 11 week screen and the 16 screen, said to choose one. My results included only the results of the trisomy testing, not gender, and I don't know if that is because it wasn't included, or if it was marked not to reveal it because we had said we didn't want to know. 
TL;DR sometimes the blood test is not an option, so the anatomy scan is the first chance they get.

Insurance, not offered, uninterested in genetic testing. We found out at 11 weeks through the blood test with our daughter (only did the test because I was super anxious) and chose to forgo the genetic screen this time because we are low risk and we didn’t want to know the gender.

12 weeks from an ultrasound on accident. (We all saw the penis clearly.) Then my doctor rechecked at 14 and 17 weeks. All three times our baby boy had a penis! With our baby girl we were able to tell by 13-14 weeks at an ultrasound. ☺️

My hospital you have to wait until 20 weeks. My fiancé and I planned to do a private scan for gender tomorrow that my sister is paying for for my Christmas gift. We open on Christmas day! I'll be 17w1d tomorrow so baby will have their thing. If they cooperate.

Where I come from you have to pay for the blood test yourself, but even if I did want to do the blood test they don't tell you the gender. I was told it was to prevent getting an abortion because of the gender. I can't imagine that anyone would do that but yeah. They tried to find out the gender at my 15 week scan and 17 weeks but baby boy wasn't showing us till 18 weeks 😊🥰😆

Not everyone gets the blood test because it’s extremely expensive and typically not fully covered by insurance. I got the blood test, asked not to know, and they told me anyways cause there was a scare on the genetics test. I would never get it again. I also think some people could care less about gender lol.
