Skipping periods

My boyfriend is in town this week for Christmas and I was supposed to get my period. I decided to skip my sugar pills that week (skipping my period) and go straight into my next pack of birth control. I am still taking them every night around the same time but I am getting pink/brownish discharge and I had a little bit of spotting a few days ago but it literally lasted an hour. Why is this happening?
