Anyone know about laws with mental hospitals?

My fiancé accidentally overdosed. He had a glass of wine and then didn’t think about it and took a few sleeping pills. He was acting weird, not sick or anything just kinda high almost. I was worried and called an ambulance. We live in ohio, they took it as a suicide attempt. That was Wednesday, they typically keep people for that for 72 hours. Now, when he went in he was fine. Absolutely nothing was wrong with him, idk If they even considered it an overdose because they said he would have been completely fine at home. He explained everything and seen the hospitals psychiatric doctor who cleared him. 
Then on Friday, the day they were supposed to let him out, they decided to transfer him to a mental facility. They told him he had no choice so he didn’t fight it. He got there and was immediately seen and the doctor said he does not belong there whatsoever and she would come back next week sometime to let him out. He’s being held but he’s not seeing any doctors, taking no meds, they didn’t put him in therapy or anything. He’s literally in a jail as he put it. They aren’t watching him like crazy, he’s one of two patients there that have “free range” 
He’s the type to not argue or ask questions so he’s just going along with it waiting to get out. But I feel like they can’t actually force him to stay can they? Even the staff told me when I went to visit there that he doesn’t belong there. 
It’s going on Sunday so he’s been held for 4 days. There’s gotta be a way to get him out? It was a complete accident. He never even been through depression or anything in his life. He loves life, and would never try to hurt himself. But if he did, he wouldn’t have done it by taking a few pills. Anyways, that doesn’t matter. What can we do?
And in case anyone asks- yes I know he didn’t try to kill himself. I was with him the whole time and ive had 4 days to question him and talk to him extensively about it. 
We had kids and he’s super worried about missing Christmas. Plus if he misses anymore work he will be fired.

I would contact the police department and ask them tbh... there are very strict rules with mental health institutions but with doctor's consent, they may let him go easily

I don’t think you’re getting the whole story. If they kept him beyond the 72 hour hold, it’s because he met certain criteria and it’s documented. If those criteria aren’t met, the hospital risks a lawsuit from the patient as well as not getting the stay paid for by the insurance company. Trust me, no hospital risks that just to keep your bf admitted. And if you’re not his wife, they aren’t going to discuss anything with you in any kind of detail. 
And just a point.....it doesn’t matter if the amount of drugs or alcohol he took would actually kill him or not. It’s a cry for help and an indicator that suicide is in his mind as a solution to whatever problem he’s having. He had to have said something to them combined with taking drugs and alcohol for them to keep him for 72 and they had to have reason to think he’s still a danger to himself for them to keep him. 
No doctor is gonna say “oh you’re fine but I’m going to keep you another week”. You have to be logical. This man isn’t telling you the truth about what’s going on. Get him to sign the paperwork needed for the facility to share his medical records with you and for them to talk to you about his case. That’s the only way you’re going to get to the bottom of why he’s still there.

Unfortunately, with what’s going on today, no one wants to be held liable. A doctor felt he wasn’t safe to be home and he just needs to cooperate at this point because any fighting back will make them question his sanity.

He needs to just go with the flow and just do as he’s told the better and sooner he will get out and he has to assure his doctor he isn’t a harm to himself or others. Anything after 72 hours is because the doctor believes that. The more he fights it unfortunately the more they can see him as unfit to return home. I’m sorry you guys are going through this, I know how stressful it can be, and I pray he gets out soon.

Why would they take him away when he wasn’t suicidal to begin with? I’m upset for you and your husband. You and your family have my condolences. I don’t live in Ohio but maybe you can get a lawyer involved. That’s all I can suggest. Regardless, you do have my condolences.
