Do you agree with them

My friend(20) and I(19) want to go to DC to the national mall, which is about 2 hours away, but my parents tell me how concerned they are for my safety and won’t let me go. My mom also lets her own personal fear of cities hold me back. I really want some life experience, something my mom keeps telling me to get, and I think going to DC, someplace my friend and I have been before with other people, would be great experience. I think my parents still see me as a young child and think I’m naive. Do you think my parents are right for saying I can’t go?

but from just reading this post I would say they’re probably right. Reason being that if you were mature enough to handle this trip then you wouldn’t need to ask a bunch of strangers online if they agree with your parents, you would just go seeing as you’re an adult.

I don’t agree with them not allowing you to go at your age. You are 19 and you need to live your own life and have your own experiences. But I do agree with their fears. If my daughter was 19 and wanted to go to DC on her own with another friend, I would be absolutely terrified. I would still let her go, but I would be shitting my pants the whole entire time. With that said, your parents may feel that you are not mature enough or too naïve, or simply not trustworthy enough￼ to go on this trip alone. But you are 19 and it’s your choice at this point. Be very careful. Be aware of your surroundings. Don’t go with any strangers even if they seem really nice. Always check your Uber driver. And carry mace. Ask your parents to trust you to go on this trip.￼￼￼

I can’t say whether they’re right or wrong for not letting you go but they’re right to be concerned. Places like that are hotspots for human trafficking victims going missing and recently there’s been a surge. Maybe if a guy was tagging along, like your friends brother or something like that then your mom would feel a lot better about the situation.

I think you are 19. Assuming you are funding your own trip and you are not avoiding any life responsibilities taking the trip, I don’t think they can tell you no. If you live under their roof it is basic decency to tell them you are going and when to expect you back, just so they know your plans and when to truly worry if you don’t come home or communicate. If the car you plan to take is not your own (in your name) then you do need permission from the owner and they can say no

If you’re supported by them financially and live with them, they do have the right to tell you no. 
If not, you’re an adult, so go. Just make sure you’re safe, you’re always together, and never go anywhere with a stranger. Be aware of the warning signs of human trafficking.

There is no letting you go or not go. They’re entitled to have their fears but literally at 19 they can no physically keep you from going. I do how ever feel that if at 19 your asking your parents if you can go then they have more control over you and it seems like a maturity thing. At 19 if my kids ask me if they can go some where I am gonna give them my thoughts but ultimately tell the your are legally adult and the decisions you make are your own as are the consequences that come along with the decisions you make

I would have to agree with them. That’s a high target area and you just never know. Also depending on the time. I wouldn’t go around the holidays. Things get crazy enough just back home, I can only imagine how things get in a highly populated area.
