When to see my doctor about my fertility?

So we are on month 10 of no birth control and month 9 of activity trying to get pregnant. Today when I was wiping I noticed tinted discharge which I'm afraid means my period is once again making an unwanted appearance. I have taken two pregnancy tests over the past couple of days and they have both been negative. My husband called a fertility doctor last month and was told that if we didn't succeed in December that I should go see my OB in January. My husband has already had a sperm analysis and everything came back normal for him. My question is does it matter what time of the month I see my OB, or do I just try and get an appointment as soon as possible?
