Why is the c section rate increasing and is it necessary?
Last night I was looking up c section rates and came across an article that said Canada’s rose to almost 30% in the last few years. The United States c section rate is also around 30%. A third of women giving birth are now having their baby delivered via c section.
Why do c section rates continue to stay high when the World Health Organization states the rate should be closer to 10-15%? I read in another article that the highest rates of c sections performed are on mothers over 35 years old. Could c section rates increasing be in part due to raising maternal age? Possibly more interventions such as elective inductions, late term ultrasounds, etc? Or do you believe it’s another reason altogether? Do you think these rates will ever be reduced?
