Car seat help/question

Okay FTM here...so bear with this silly question. Since we’ve seen everyone and their mother this holiday season...it’s time to wash the infant carrier/car seat. Little man is 7.5 months and 28.5 inches long! He’ll prolly outgrow our current carrier (30inch max) before February. Obviously we removed the infant insert a long time ago but is this gray ‘cover’ over the buckle suppose to be removed as well? I’ve seen other carriers where it’s just the buckle piece, no cover but don’t know if they are designed to be that way or what? Is this only for comfort or is it required? I feel like my little man is sitting with his legs forced open, maybe he just likes man-splaying? The cover is designed to be removed (but everything that’s fabric can be removed so 🤷‍♀️) its held on by a small piece of fabric threaded under the buckle. I’ve read the manual but doesn’t clarify if it’s considered part of the infant ‘insert’. Anyways should I keep it on or remove it? And is it still safe for him? It’s a Chicco keyfit 30. Thanks in advance ladies!
