how to drive on icy roads. tips?

sooo I have to drive 3 hours home tomorrow and I live in northern michigan.... the roads are pretty bad from what i’ve heard cause it’s snowed a LOT and my friend got stuck yesterday. I have to take highways south. any tips on how to avoid running of the road or getting stuck lol? I just gotta get home

Do not accelerate, decelerate, or turn fast. Take your time. If you get stuck in snow pressing the gas fast does not help and can get you stuck more.

Never slam on your breaks, always tap your breaks. So if you need to stop make many taps on the breaks very early,  instead of one big push on the break.

Make sure you have a full tank or gas and carry kitty litter in case you get stuck for traction. Sounds weird but it works. And take your time!

Slow and steady, no sudden hits on the accelerator or breaks. Carry sand and salt in your car as well as maintenance supplies and water: things to keep warm.

Give yourself way more room between vehicles, way more time when coming to a stop, slow down before you think you need to. If your sliding, slowly correct yourself.

All I can say is to go slow, people are always trying to rush and speed, (specially in Michigan, I live here and I personally feel like we all tend to drive like assholes) and just stay ahead of yourself, slow down way before you need to so you don’t slide at the last second, and I personally always stay kind of close to the side of the road so if I do start sliding I can kinda go off the edge a little and have my tires grip the snow, that trick has worked for me more than a few times.
