Root canal at 33 weeks???

Question

Can you get a root canal at 33 weeks?? because my tooth is KILLING me and the abscess is horrible. However I don’t want anything to harm my baby because of the procedure. I would love to hear any thoughts as well.

Having the root canal done is less dangerous than leaving an abscess. They will probably require you to get consent from your doctor and will use a pregnancy safe anesthetic. The only other thing they could do for you if you want to wait to have the root canal done is prescribe you antibiotics for the abscess but I’m not sure if amoxicillin is safe during pregnancy. Consult your dentist and ask them what the best route would be.

You'll be fine! I'm a dental assistant. You'll actually want to get the root canal done if possible, but typically they will always want your doctors permission. Root canals have a bad rep because of the pain and infection associated with them beforehand but honestly a root canal won't be painful, just be sure to let them know if the pain is too much so they can get you more anesthetic.

I just had a root canal a couple weeks ago at 33 weeks actually! I’m so glad I did, I feel so much better now. Just make sure your dentist uses a numbing agent with no epinephrine. They should know that anyway. I was prescribed Tylenol #3 (has codeine) for the pain which was a big help and penicillin (4 times a day) for the infection. It took a little over a week before I felt back to normal but I feel fine now!

From what I read they would like you to be in the 2nd trimester but obviously we aren’t in control of these things. But they will do it if it’s necessary and causing you pain. It shouldn’t harm you or the baby.
