How does the doctor “check your cervix”

Mary

When you are in labour how is a cervical exam done to determine how dilated you are? Is there a device they put up there? Is it visual? A Finger? Just trying to mentally prepare myself for everything lol

The measure with their fingers and guesstimate based on what they feel. So it can vary from person to person. Dilation tells you nothing and I’d recommend denying any cervical checks as it just increases your risk of infection.

They measure with their fingers. It’s quite uncomfortable.

They put their 2 fingers up in there and they feel around to see how far you’re.

Tbh that wasn’t the most uncomfortable thing I think the most uncomfortable thing is that when the epidural didn’t work for me and they had to stick a catheter in me omfg I felt everything worst thing ever!

They just use their fingers. There is no device they use. You can 100% refuse a cervix check if you feel it’s unnecessary at that point. I would recommend it when you feel like it’s closer to time to make sure you are dilated enough to push. Sometimes there can be a lip of cervix in the way and pushing against it can cause inflammation and then baby can’t get past it because it’s swollen too much. Honestly, I didn’t even feel it when I was that far into active labor (I had a natural birth) the contractions were all I could think about so I didn’t even notice when they did it. I just said yes when they asked.

With their hand/fingers. Get used to it, it's going to happen a lot.

You can refuse. Or you can use the information to know how you're progressing and make decisions. Jeez, calm down people.

You can refuse them. You have a right to. It’s your body.
